6 Natural Ways To Reduce Muscle Spasms And Pain

Why is muscle pain so prevalent today when hundreds of hands-on therapies, over-the-counter medications and do-it-yourself techniques for pain reduction are available almost any time of day? The reason is not that the pills, pain patches and therapies don’t work. Rather, the answer can most likely be found in your habits — known or unknown. The little things in your life, when combined day after day, can cause chronic muscle pain. Change those little things, and you can get big pain relief.

Muscles cramp, spasm and become painful for a number of reasons. Most of the more serious reasons, like serious medical illness and traumatic injury, are less common and certainly need proper diagnosis and treatment. For many people suffering with chronic muscle pain, inflammation, cramps and spasms, the reasons are less serious. However, they are nonetheless vital to address in order to stop the pain-and-inflammation cycle and reduce the frequency, severity and duration of attacks.

Essential things to do and keep in mind to help prevent muscle pain include:

Stay Hydrated With Plenty Of Pure Water
Water is one of the three essential things needed for life. (The others are oxygen and sunlight.) Water is so vital to life that life would not exist without it. While the human body is meant to be about 70 percent water, most people are chronically dehydrated. It is true that many people drink fluids throughout their day, yet they remain dehydrated. This happens when one consumes liquids that are diuretics.

Diuretics are substances that cause the body to excrete water. These include coffee, black tea, sodas and alcoholic beverages (particularly beer). When too many of these beverages are consumed, the body expels them quickly via urine and sweat. However, the body needs to retain enough purified fluids to maintain proper organ function, to remove toxins from the blood and to keep the skin moist. When water is low, toxins are not as easily processed or removed from the body and can begin recycling in the blood. This can cause pain, spasms and inflammation in the muscles.

Drinking eight to 10 glasses of pure or filtered water per day should bring you back to healthy levels within a few days. Some studies suggest people are habitually 2 quarts of water low. Others demonstrate that as long as your urine is clear, then your water levels are good. Start with counting how many glasses of water you consume, then check your urine. You will feel the difference and discover the levels you need.

Maintain Your Magnesium Levels
Magnesium is one of the essential minerals in the body that, when left unchecked, can lead to muscle pain, cramping, spasms and twitching. Magnesium helps all your organ systems function properly. Low levels of magnesium are a known cause of muscle pain. Most people need 300 mg to 400 mg of magnesium daily to help maintain proper functioning of the body. If supplementation is not your thing, then eating plenty of foods high in magnesium can do wonders. These include green leafy vegetables, whole grains and bran, soy beans, and pumpkin.

Here’s the scoop: Even if you get enough magnesium through diet or supplementation, your levels can still be decreased by internal causes. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), other gastrointestinal (GI) issues, diabetes, kidney disease or pancreatitis can be the cause of your decreased magnesium levels.

Maintain Your Potassium Levels
Like magnesium, potassium is essential to body function. When the body’s magnesium levels are low, they can negatively impact potassium levels. When potassium levels drop below 3.7 mEq/L, the body has what is known as hypokalemia, which causes one to become weak and feel fatigued and causes muscles to twitch and cramp. This is because potassium is necessary for nerve signals, muscle contractions and fluid balance.

Potassium is best ingested in natural food forms. It is found in fruits (most notably apricots, bananas, raisins and figs), wheat bran, wheat germ, dried fruits, mixed seeds, beans and vegetables. Most common cereals and breads are fortified with this mineral. Exercise And Stretch Every Day
Exercise is another simple thing that you can do every day to become healthier and prevent needless pain and inflammation. I know it is difficult to think about exercising when you are in pain. However, the main purpose of exercising for pain relief is to bolster blood flow. Even simple walking will help reduce your levels of muscle imbalances.

Walking for 30 minutes at an even pace, engaging in a simple stretching routine or participating in a yoga class will all help align the spine, keep the muscles supple and engender blood flow. When the blood is flowing well, a fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients move in the body, helping reduce pain and inflammation, repair the effects of stress and strain, and move toxins out of the body. Think of muscle spasms as stagnations of blood trapped in the tissue and causing pain.

Reduce Stress With Mind-Body Techniques
Do you rub your neck or low back constantly while at work or around certain people or events? This is stress making itself felt. Stress is a necessary part of life and of our survival. However, unhealthy stress can lead to excessive worry, anxiety, insomnia, improper breathing, muscle spasms and pain. While it is easy to suggest that you evaluate your life and remove all things and people that cause too much stress, this is not easily (or practically) done.

The good news is that there are quite a few simple mind-body techniques that can help reduce the effects and severity of stress. These include methods like biofeedback, mindful meditation, yoga, qigong, visualizations and hypnotherapy. Looking into some of these and putting them into daily practice will go a long way to reducing the negative effects of stress on the body.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep
Sleeping well is another essential element the body needs in order to repair and rebuild. Even with a diet rich in magnesium and potassium, plenty of water and exercise, and stress-reduction techniques, lack of ample deep sleep keeps the body from fully repairing itself. Sleeping at least seven hours in a position that will not cause you pain is necessary.

The secret to pain-free deep sleep is to set a standard sleep- and wake-time cycle. Not reading or drinking before bedtime also helps reduce insomnia and waking to urinate during the night. Sleeping on your back or on your side with a pillow between the knees will keep the spine in a supported position to decrease chances of pinched nerves or muscle spasms from poor sleep posture. The key is to get into the habit of regular sleep that allows you to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day — not stiff, tired and anxious.

In Summary
While some of the issues that can cause us to experience acute and chronic muscle pain and inflammation are beyond our control, many of them are completely within our power to change. If you experience daily muscle discomfort, the best thing you can do to help yourself is to get into a pattern of caring for yourself. In other words, be nice to yourself by not doing the things that can cause you more pain or discomfort and by doing the simple things that will help reduce and prevent a painful body. The six things mentioned in this article are keys to less pain. Incorporating them into your daily life will help in many ways.

Restless Leg Syndrome Linked To Fibromyalgia

October 19, 2010 A new study says adults with fibromyalgia have a much higher prevalence and risk of RLS than anyone else.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, it is estimated 5 million Americans age 18 or older area affected by Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia can cause significant pain and fatigue and the causes still remain unknown. RLS is a sleep-related movement disorder that involves an urge to move the legs that is usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs. Now researchers of Loyola University Medical Center are saying treating RLS may improve sleep and quality of life in people with fibromyalgia.
They studied 172 people with fibromyalgia and then compared them with 63 people with no signs of the disease. Pain was assessed by subjective report and by measurement with a dolorimeter, a spring-loaded gauge that is used to apply standardized rates of pressure to tender points on the arms and legs.

Results showed that the prevalence of restless legs syndrome was about 10 times higher in the fibromyalgia group than it the healthier group. After taking under consideration their age, gender and ethnicity, participants with fibromyalgia were 11 times more likely than controls to have RLS. In the fibromyalgia group these sleep problems were more severe among people who also had RLS.
"Sleep disruption is common in fibromyalgia, and often difficult to treat," contributing author Dr. Nathaniel F. Watson, associate professor of neurology at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. was quoted saying. "It is apparent from our study that a substantial portion of sleep disruption in fibromyalgia is due to restless legs syndrome."

GINGER CURE FOR MUSCLE PAIN
You’ve experienced muscle soreness after a workout, right? You give it your all at the gym, on the tennis court, in the pool -- and then, ouch. Well, here’s an easy, safe, natural and inexpensive cure that will mean you don’t have to treat yourself so gingerly -- take ginger!
Long used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine as a remedy for ailments such as nausea, indigestion, flatulence, flu, diarrhea, motion sickness and osteoarthritis, ginger (Zingiber officinale) now has been scientifically proven to be helpful in relieving muscle pain and soreness. A new study shows that taking daily doses of ginger can ease the aches and pains that follow strenuous exercise.

THE GINGER STUDY
Researchers at the University of Georgia studied whether daily doses of ginger can inhibit exercise-related muscle pain. One group of 34 participants consumed capsules filled with two grams of raw (untreated) ginger (this is equivalent to the 500-mg capsules of raw ginger sold in health-food stores). A second group of 40 people took two grams of heat-treated ginger (earlier studies had shown that heating ginger may increase its pain-relieving properties). A third group took a placebo. All participants consumed their capsules for 11 consecutive days -- seven days before... the day of... and three days after a high-intensity weight-lifting session (designed to induce muscle pain and inflammation) performed on the eighth day.
Measuring several different variables, including effort and pain intensity (reported by participants)... range of motion... strength... and levels of prostaglandins (inflammation-mediators involved in pain), researchers found that...
• Participants taking daily raw ginger supplements reported 25% less exercise-induced pain than the placebo group.
• Participants taking daily heat-treated ginger had 23% less pain than the placebo group.

WHY GINGER HELPS
Patrick O’Connor, PhD, led the research study. He told me that ginger works much like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen) do, by inhibiting prostaglandin production. Unlike NSAIDs, ginger also serves to desensitize a type of pain receptor found in the peripheral nerves known as TRPV1 and it also reduces the body’s production of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, said Dr. O’Connor. These results were published in the September 2010 issue of The Journal of Pain.
Muscle aches and pains are common among athletes -- particularly serious ones, older ones and weekend warriors. If you fall into any of those categories, you may want to consider taking ginger to minimize your post-workout agony. Although this study didn’t test the efficacy of ginger against NSAIDs, Dr. O’Connor told me that the study participants experienced greater pain relief than did those in similar tests of ibuprofen and naproxen, but without the NSAID-related risks of stomach irritation and ulcers.

TRY IT AT HOME
If you’d like to give this a try, Dr. O’Connor suggests purchasing ginger capsules that contain a standardized extract with a gingerol content of 5%. Take one two-gram daily dose for several days before and after planned workouts.

If you love the taste of ginger: Kitchen equivalents are as follows -- a two-gram dose of raw ginger in capsule form is roughly equivalent to one teaspoon of powdered ginger... 2 milliliters (about one-half teaspoon) of ginger extract ... or (my favorite) one tablespoon of finely chopped fresh ginger.

Abstract and Introduction
Abstract

Ribose was added to the existing treatment regimen of a woman with fibromyalgia, resulting in a decrease in symptoms. It has been postulated that patients with fibromyalgia may have an alteration in muscle adenine nucleotide metabolism, leading to depleted energy reserves and an imbalance in cellular adenosine-triphosphate:adenosine 5'-diphosphate:adenosine 5'-monophosphate (ATP:ADP:AMP) ratios with an abnormal energy charge. As a key component in adenine nucleotide synthesis, ribose supplementation may be useful in such patients.

Introduction
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that is manifested by generalized muscle pain and additional systemic symptoms of fatigue, tenderness and stiffness in multiple joints, sleep disturbance, and alterations in bowel activity.The specific etiology is unknown; however, changes in muscle histology, energy metabolism, oxygen utilization, and the neuroendocrine stress-response system have been postulated to play a role in the development and persistence of this disorder.

[1] Low levels of muscle adenine nucleotides, reflected in depleted energy reserves and an imbalance in cellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate:adenosine 5'-diphosphate:adenosine 5'-monophosphate (ATP:ADP:AMP) ratios with an abnormal energy charge, have been reported.[2-4] The unknown cause and varying presenting symptoms make fibromyalgia a therapeutic challenge for practitioners.[5-7]

Routine daily exercise programs, dietary modifications, alternative therapies such as biofeedback and hypnotherapy, and nutraceuticals such as S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) have also been explored.[9]
Unfortunately, less than 50% of patients achieve any meaningful relief of their symptoms with use of those therapies.[5]We describe the case of a patient with fibromyalgia who had symptomatic relief when ribose was added to her existing treatment regimen.

There have been anecdotal reports on the benefits of ribose in patients with fibromyalgia in whom conventional therapies have failed; however, to our knowledge, this is the first published case of use of ribose for this syndrome.

Case ReportA 37-year-old woman had daily episodes of intense musculoskeletal pain and stiffness, mental "cloudiness," bouts of diarrhea, and sleep disturbance. As she was a surgeon, these symptoms compromised the skills necessary to perform her daily duties in the operating room. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia by exclusion of other diseases and syndromes and in accordance with the American College of Rheumatology criteria.[10]

The patient was treated with ibuprofen 800 mg twice/day, valdecoxib 10 mg once/day, diphenhydramine 50 mg-acetaminophen 1000 mg at bedtime, and physical therapy once/day. She stated that this therapeutic regimen had limited benefit and that the adverse effects from these drugs further impaired her ability to perform her operative duties.

Approximately 7 months later, in addition to her regular drug therapy, the patient began taking CORvalen (Bioenergy, Inc., Ham Lake, MN), a ribose-based product. She took 5 g of CORvalen mixed in water twice/day. She experienced no adverse effects, and after 14 days she reported a decrease in her symptoms. Specifically, she noted an improvement in sleep, mental alertness, a marked decrease in joint pain, and normal stools.

This trend continued, and after an additional month of CORvalen therapy she reported near-normal functioning with a major reduction in her symptoms.After another month of taking CORvalen and feeling "normal," the patient elected to discontinue the drug. Within 7 days, she regressed to her initial fibromyalgia state, as reflected in joint pain, sleep disturbance, morning stiffness, trigger-point flares, and diarrhea. She resumed taking CORvalen, at the same dosage as before, and a major reduction in her symptoms again occurred within 14 days. She noted continual benefit for the next month while taking CORvalen. She stopped taking the drug for a second time after this additional 30-day period, and once again she experienced a reemergence of symptoms.

When CORvalen was restarted for a third time, the patient's symptoms again subsided.At the time of this writing, the patient was continuing to take CORvalen and was satisfied that her symptoms had abated.DiscussionRibose is a simple carbohydrate that plays a role in high-energy phosphate and nucleic acid synthesis. After ischemia or hypoxia, myocytes have decreased levels of ATP and total adenine nucleotides. Several days are required for their recovery once normoxia has been reestablished.[11-13] In patients with chronic hypoxic conditions, the cellular energy charge may never be fully regained.[14]These cells have the capacity to regenerate ATP; however, the pentose phosphate pathway of glucose metabolism utilized in the formation of the ribose that is needed to drive the regenerative process is slow in both heart and skeletal muscle cells due to poor expression of specific rate-limiting enzymes.

Supplemental ribose has been shown to enhance the synthesis of adenine nucleotides, rebuilding depressed energy pools in both the heart and skeletal muscle after an ischemic or hypoxic insult.[11, 12] Ribose bypasses the rate-limiting enzymatic steps of the pentose phosphate pathway and accelerates the formation of ATP and subsequent tissue recovery.[15]

Supplemental ribose is initially converted to ribose-5-phosphate, subsequently forming 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate, a molecule key to the synthesis of ATP through the de novo purine nucleotide pathway. The safety of ribose has been investigated in standard laboratory and animal toxicology models and in human studies both subjectively and objectively.

Investigators have concluded that ribose is well tolerated at dosages of up to 60 g/day, with no significant adverse effects.[16]Ribose has been shown to improve the energy recovery time in skeletal muscle and to relieve fatigue, soreness, and stiffness after intense exercise.[12, 13, 17] It also has been reported to have a beneficial effect after high-intensity exercise in sports medicine.One study concluded that ribose accelerated the replenishment of ATP after intense muscle contractions,[18] and bodybuilders and sprinters have reported subjective and objective benefits during exercise after the administration of ribose.[18-20] However, other reports have shown inconsistent results for ribose in relation to improving short-term anaerobic exercise performance, muscle strength, endurance, or body composition during cycling or resistance training.[20, 21]

Ribose has also been investigated for its potential medical efficacy in both animal studies and human clinical trials. To date, the most promising data have been reported in connection with the application of ribose in cardiovascular disease. Both short-term and long-term animal studies found that the use of ribose after myocardial ischemia resulted in enhanced recovery of ATP along with improved diastolic functional parameters.[22, 23]

Clinical benefits have also been observed. Patients with coronary artery disease or heart failure have decreased myocardial ATP levels. Daily supplemental ribose has been shown to improve cardiac function, increase exercise tolerance, and enhance quality of life in this population.[24]Patients with fibromyalgia may experience an alteration in physiologic muscle metabolism. It has been found that they reach the anaerobic threshold in their muscles earlier, thereby using less of the available energy-rich phosphate metabolites at maximal work capacity.[25]

In another study, patients with fibromyalgia were reported to have a potential abnormality in high-energy phosphate metabolism, as evidenced by significantly lower levels of ATP and ADP in affected muscles as compared with patients without the disease.[2]

Theoretically, the effect of ribose on increasing the muscle energy pool could reduce the metabolic strain in affected muscles and allow patients to assume a more active lifestyle. Considering the known musculoskeletal symptomatology in this syndrome and the reported benefits of ribose in skeletal muscle metabolism and physiology, supplemental ribose appears to have aided our patient in improving her quality of life.

Conclusion
Fibromyalgia presents a continuing therapeutic challenge. Ribose is a naturally occurring carbohydrate with documented medical benefits in patients with cardiovascular disease. To our knowledge, this is the first report to suggest its potential benefit in a patient with fibromyalgia, who had had suboptimal results with conventional therapies. Missing Nutrients

Many people, desperate for relief from constant suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic pain, have opted for surgery, physical therapy and/or pain medications, including anti-depressants, and still they say "I hurt all over."

Using prescription medications, such as antidepressants, tranquilizers and pain medications, only treats the symptoms. Prescription medications only use the current supply of neurotransmitters and nutrients and do not create any new neurotransmitters (the chemical language of the brain).

Anxiety and depression will almost always follow.

Missing Nutrients

Recent research has shown that FM patients may be deficient in certain compounds required for the synthesis of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).

One of the most crucial elements for ATP synthesis is magnesium. Research suggests FM patients have below-normal levels of magnesium. Low levels of magnesium can contribute to PMS, headaches, muscle cramping, muscle spasms, heart palpitations and even heart attacks. Many common foods Americans eat deplete magnesium reserves. Alzheimer's Disease patients have been found to have unusually high levels of aluminum in their brains. It was once assumed that these people had ingested large amounts of aluminum during their lifetimes. However, while that may be true, it is now thought that how much aluminum is consumed is not nearly as important as how well our bodies can detoxify and eliminate the substance.

Treatment with malic acid has been shown to greatly increase the fecal and urinary excretion of aluminum and reduce the concentration of aluminum found in various organs and tissues.

Clinical tests are proving malic acid to be a great asset in the treatment of FM and chronic pain. In one clinical study, reported in "The Journal of Nutritional Medicine," 15 patients (aged 32-60) taking a dosage of 200-2400 mg. of maIic acid with 300-600 mg of magnesium for four to eight weeks, reported significant pain relief within 48 hours. These positive effects continued to increase over the test period.

The mineral manganese and B complex vitamins have also been shown to be deficient in both CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and FM sufferers. Combinations of GABA, glutamine and glycine, (inhibitory neurotransmitters) have been helpful in lowering stress levels by controlling limbic firing in the brain.
